MAPPING HUMAN MIGRATION
Growing concerns over an ‘invasion’ of refugees and migrants helped to elect Donald Trump and sway Brexit voters. Yet the data suggest that the situation is very different from how it is often portrayed. Researchers warn that misleading reports about the magnitude of flows into Europe and the United States creates unjustified fears about refugees. This undermines efforts to manage the massive humanitarian problems faced by those fleeing Syria and other hotspots.

Data visualization is an excellent tool for providing clarity to an audience. We mapped were the refugees are actually coming from, and where they are going, designed by Nature's Jasiek Krzysztofiak, with data analysis by Nature's editorial team.
We are proud to have received the Malofiej award for Best Human Rights Graphic for this work.
There is also an interactive version created by Nature's Chris Ryan.
